Week 6 Updates

This past weekend, the crew and I traveled to Charlotte to get our 2nd and 3rd interviews done. On Saturday, we interviewed our two experts at one location. We interviewed them each separately, then together. They both had a lot of good information regarding their experiences with the case, and seemed comfortable talking about it. Elizabeth Leland is a journalist that covered the case in 2016. We interviewed her first, and the interview lasted around thirty minutes. Todd Sumlin is a photojournalist that covered the case, and he also worked closely with Elizabeth. He was very comfortable around the camera and provided good information regarding his experiences. When we interviewed them together, they both shared their experiences with one another, and it was obvious that they both had a good connection as co-workers. During their joint-interview, they discussed the pictures that they took of the evidence box relating to Ira's case.

Later that day, we took a boat out on the river to find the memorial of Ira. Unfortunately, the cross that was originally placed at her memorial was no where to be found. We still filmed at this location, though, as it is where Ira was found. We also got some shots along the river as we were leaving.

So far, we have gotten three expert interviews. We plan on finding more useful sources of information, such as the poetry group that Ira was involved in. We will probably be filming in Durham in the near future.

Week 11 Updates

Last weekend, the crew managed to get some b-roll of the UNC-Charlotte theatre department, as well as some of the Mount Holly area. Since Ira was a part of the theatre scene at UNCC, it was appropriate to include this footage. Getting more footage of the Mount Holly area also allows us to present a more personal environment to the audience, so that they can get a sense of the location where Ira lived. At this point in our project, we have plenty of b-roll, and a fair amount of interviews. Now, we need to get a clear grasp on how we will organize our footage both structurally and stylistically. Since our aim is to present Ira's story in a personal manner, rather than an objective "crime story" perspective, it hasn't been easy. I will be discussing the structure and stylistic aspects of the film later today with Knox. Week 13 Updates

On Monday, Knox and I discussed our upcoming due dates. We discussed how we could divide up some work between each of our crew members so that way all of us can get our work done faster. Knox also told me that he has a clearer vision on how he wants the documentary to unfold, as that was something that we were struggling with these past few weeks. Knox has been working on some of the editing of the project, as well as the narration that will be in the film. I will be editing the interviews down so that important pieces of information are included in the film. Cody will be working on the sound design and Taylor will be sorting through the b-roll and grading it to determine which b-roll footage will be in the film. This Sunday, all of us plan on being in the editing lab to finish our final cut. Week 14 Updates

This past Sunday, the crew and I were in the editing lab. Knox was working on the master edit, while also trying to figure out how to structure the film as a whole. Cody was synching the audio to the interviews, I was cutting down some of the interviews so that important points were highlighted, and Taylor worked on finding relevant pictures to the case as well as relevant videos relating to it. Later this week, we will all be working on our Marketing and Distribution plan so that we can present during our final exam period. Since this is my last weekly update, there isn't a lot more that I can think of to write, other than that I enjoyed working on this project with my crew members and am excited to see where this film leads in the future. I like where the project is heading, and I believe that Knox's passion for the film will definitely push it to success.
